The sky was overcast. Streaks of lightning zigzagged across the sky followed by claps of thunder. "I bet it's going to rain,"Hong said. "How clever of you,Hong'"his cousin Ming teased him. "In this kind of weather, of course you didn't expect a snow storm, did you?" For teasing his cousin, Ming had a cushion crashing down on his head which he retaliated to by sending another cushion flying in Hong's direction. "Hey, will both of you boys act your age?" Keong reapproched with an air of authority. Being the oldest among the three cousins, he always had the last say in everything. "You don't want Aunt May to send us to bed without dinner when she sees how untidy her cushions have become,"he continued. "Don't worry,"Hong replied smugly. "In this kind of weather, Uncle Sam and Aunt May won't get home until midnight. "Traffic jam!"Ming and Keong uttered in disgust.
The three cousins were visiting their uncle and aunt during the school holidays. Coming from East Malaysia, they were at first amazed, then bewildered and later disgusted at the mammoth traffic jams in KL especially during the rainy weather like this evening. "In my opinion, the modern day equivalent of the ancient torture chambers are the traffic jams. Getting caught in one on a rainy evening when all the office workers are rushing to go home is a real nightmare,"Hong said. "That is what Uncle Sam and AUnt May and thousands of other working people will be going through this evening,"Ming said even as the first drop of rain began to fall.
"Since we can't go outdoors this evening, why don't we pretend to be City Hall palnners out to solve the city's traffic woes?We can start by examining what causes traffic jams and then work towards solving the problems,"Keong suggested. "Good,"Hong said excitedly. "I'm sure all of us have a lot to say about KL's traffic jams especially after having caught in several of them. "In my opinion,"MIng began,"the cheif reason for the traffic jam in KL is the traffic volume in the city which has expanded faster than the roads can cope."
"You're right,"Keong answered. "The las decade saw a rapid increase in the number of cars in KL. That has really puta tremendous strain on the roads and the traffic city controllers." "In other words, it means that if we were to take away some of the cats, the roads would not be congested any more,"Hong chipped in. "You're right,"keong declared. "And that was the underlying objective of the car pool campaign." Hong smiled happily. He felt very proud at being praised by his cousin. Feeling a little jealous at the compliment that Hong had received, Ming ventured anither opinion. "If I were a city traffic controller, I would initiate a merit system whereby cars with passengers will be awarded a discount on parking fees."
"Now that's a good suggestion,"Keong complimented his cousin. "With the cost of parking so high in the city, alot of motorists would be only too happy to join in a scheme like that." "But in my opinion,"Hong added,"the magic word is still cooperation. If every motorists were to have more consideration on the rosd, the traffic jams would be greatly lessened."
"Right!"Keong exclaimed excitedly. He was pleased that his cousins who was only 14 years old could come up with such a insightful observation. This time. even Ming had to concede that his younger cousin had made a very pertinent remark. "If we could have a wish now,"he said,"we would wish that every motorists in KL would show more consideration on the road." "Yes,"Keong agreed. "We wolud like to see every motorists cooperating with each other in this rainy weather so that Uncle Sam and Aunt May can come home early." "Did that mean that we can have our dinner earlier?"Hong asked."I'm feeling hungry already."
"Did exercising your brainmake your stomach empty?"Ming again teased his cousin.Just as Hong was aboutto release a cushion at Ming's direction,Keong exclaimed in surprise, "I cannot beleive my eyes!Uncle Sam and Aunt May are home already." Even as Ming and Hong rushed to the window to verify Keong words,a car came upthe driveway.Indeed, Uncle Sam and Aunt May had arrived home earlier than usual. Upon seeing their uncle and aunt, Hong ran to the door and threw it open excitedly. On the way, he nearly tripped over Ming. "Watch it,"Ming mildly reapproched his cousin."Dont tell me you're so hungry that you cant wait to let them in to begin diiner!"Hong made a face at Ming before helpingUncle Sam nad Aunt May with their bags." uncle sam and aunt may, you're back early,"he said. uncle sam took the towel that keong brought for him. after drying his hands, he passed it to his wife. then they both went in to change out of their slightly damn clothes. when they emerged later, they were pleased that the boys had already prepared some hot drinks for them. as they settled down to sip the hot tea, they began to answer the questions that their nephews threw at them.
"uncle sam and aunt may,"keong began,"How come you're back so early?wasn't there a massive traffic jam in the city in this kind of weather?" "I shall leave your uncle to tell you about phenomenon on the road while I go and prepare dinner,"aunt may answered. with that she got up from the chair and went into the kitchen."your aunt was right,"uncle sam said with a smile."Indeed, this evening, unusual thing happened on the city roads." "A strange thing happened on your way home?"Hong asked curiously."yes,"uncle sam continued."when the rain started at 5 p.m., aunt may and I were feeling very dejected.we dreaded having to drive home in a massive jam which is the common occurrence in the city on a rainy evening. But as we took the car out of the basement carpark, we were surprised that though the traffic on the road was heavy, it was moving smoothly.in fact, that was the situation all the way home."
"Do you mean to say that there was no traffic jam?"Hong asked with disbelief. "Yes,"uncle sam answered laughingly. "There was non of the usual irritating incidents associated with a traffic jam. No one was overtaking recklessly or cutting into other's lanes inconsiderately."Uncle sam went on to describe how the motorists obeyed all the traffic rules accordingly and also showed a lot of consideration to one another. As a result." uncle sam said, "the traffic moved smoothly despite the bad weather and we could get home early." "Why were the motorists driving so diffrently this time?"Ming asked. "I really don't know,"uncle sam replied laughingly."both aunt may and I were very surprised at the change of attitude of the motorists. We really don't know what came over them but they were certainly cooperating with each other on the road and so there was no traffic jam." " Actually, we make a wish...."Hong began but before he could go further, Ming gave him a sharp nudge in the ribs to silence him.
" I beg your pardon, what were you saying Hong,"uncle sam asked.Reading the look on Ming's face, Hong quickly assured his uncle that he wasn't saying anything important.Just then, aunt may announced the dinner was ready and the boys happily trooped into the dining room with their uncle. That evening, as the boys were preparing for bed, they discussed the eveing events.
" While talking about the traffic jams this evening, we made a wish that every motorists in the city would show more consideration on the road and cooperate with each other and our wish acrually came true,"Ming said. " It was bewildering,"Keong said contemplatively. "A casual wish could come true but it was for the best, of course."
"Maybe God overhead our conversation and this is one way of telling us that we were correct about the traffic jams,"Hong added. "From this incident,we've learnt that the only way to effectively solve the traffic woes in the city is by cooperating with other drivers and obeying all the traffic rules." For once you're putting your brains to good use,"Ming teased his cousin again. The next moment, he felt a pillow crashing down on his head and he knew that he had succeeded in annoying his cousin.
